FROM TOMS - THE GIVING SIDE
Notes from Haiti - Shoes are a Piece of the Puzzle
The following is a post from our Giving Account Manager, Jenise Steverding, regarding her recent trip to Haiti. She shares a bit about her own past work in Haiti and the encouragement she experienced in seeing the progress just over 1 year later.
We all have some life moments that leave a lasting impression. For me, memories in Carrefour, Haiti will last a lifetime. My first memories there are of the devastation brought by the 2010 earthquake.Now, through my work with TOMS, my most recent memories are of children wearing our shoes to protect their feet in a dangerous environment.
Prior to joining the TOMS Giving Department, I was working in the field of relief and development. In January 2010, I was deployed to Haiti to oversee the distribution of medical supplies and medicines in response to the earthquake. I travelled to visit an organization called Grace International, who were supporting over 20,000 people living under sheets in a make-shift city.
My first experience in Carrefour is difficult to recount. The Haiti earthquake was one of the most devastating naturaldisasters of my lifetime. But in spite of the pain and destruction around, there were also signs of resilience and hope of a people determined to find ways to move forward. Over the thirteen months that have passed since that trip, I have often thought of the people still living at the Grace tent city. This month, I was able to return to Carrefour, where TOMS has had the privilege to give new shoes to children who have lost everything. On the way there, my heart was filled with anticipation, wondering if things would have improved.
As my car pulled up, I let out a shout of excitement to see children running around with their new TOMS protecting their feet. I toured the community and was pleased to see latrines built (and spotless), school resumed, tents numbered by “city blocks”, a washing station, a working clinic, and a new water well station that was serving the community with clean water. While people are still living in tents, everywhere I looked I saw thirteen months of progress in this Haitian community.
Shoes are just one component of the recovery efforts in Haiti, but for these children, they make an important contribution to health and their ability to attend school. Haiti has a long way to go in its recovery, but we’re proud to be part of the effort.

GET INVOLVE IN HAITI BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT

Haiti has received 20,000 pairs of shoes for their Back to School Project from Share Our Shoes. Thanks to LeVelle Moton's leadership role with this Back to School Haiti Shoe Drive, we have been successful in assisting the Pye Ate organization in Haiti put shoes on the feet of 5,240 children so far. We (Moton, Pye Ate, and SOS) have been able to partner to attempt to reach our goal of 1 million pairs of shoes to Haiti. Through these video footages that Fedrique Pierre, founder of Pye Ate, personally brought in from Haiti to show SOS, you will see that there’s STILL an enormous need for our unused shoes in Haiti. Please aid us in putting shoes on the 20,000+ pupils still awaiting a pair in their size, so they may attend school safely and without the worry of not having shoes. We are confident through our partnership with LeVelle Moton, we will reach our goal of 1 Million pairs shared for 2011 !
A Special “Thank You” to LeVelle Moton, whose wholehearted devotion to this mission to provide shoes, has absolutely taken off!! We look forward to reporting our success for the upcoming “Back to School” in Haiti Distributions and hope that you will join LeVelle in collecting the shoes needed for September's Distribution on in to the end of this year! We are proud of our Official Spokesperson, LeVelle and know that we could not have done this without him.
Also, A Special “Thank You” to Fedrique of Pye Ate Organization, who was referred to us through Samaritan's Purse back in January. Fedrique has headed up some of the largest distributions ever done on behalf of SOS by one person. He traveled ALL OVER Haiti, recruited volunteers, and distributed to 19 different orphanages in one week’s time. He has literally put the shoes that we raised on over 5000 children's feet himself. The pictures and footage below are from his efforts and we thank him VERY much! He has a huge heart and takes pride in his mission to cover bare feet in Haiti. Listen to his message below. FOUNDATION PYE ATE receives support from the Coach LeVelle MOTON
The foundation PYE ATE HAITI has confirmed this Friday, June 24, 2011 an agreement with the Coach Levelle Moton of North Carolina Central University who is the Official Spokesperson of “SOS” Share Our Shoes. With his lead roll with the shoe charity, He promises to help assist the Pye Ate foundation to collect 100,000 pairs of much needed back to school shoes for her upcoming distributions.
This contribution is intends to assist the foundation in its future distributions on the occasion of the new school year, on September.
Born of Haitian father, Levelle Moton is the current Head Coach of the men's basketball team of the NCCU (North Carolina Central University). He plans to organize collects and shoedrives throughout the North Carolina for the needy people of Haiti.
"I want to give back to Haiti a part of what I received from abroad," said Moton that promises to raise alone, 100 thousand pairs of shoes for PYE ATE through the Share Our Shoes program in Raleigh, North Carolina. LeVelle Moton is an official spokesperson for the organization, who has already sent over 20,000 pairs to Pye Ate.

Founding President of the ATE PYE judges that this gesture is a valuable support for the efforts of that foundation. Mr. Pierre Fedrique said: "This act shows to us how the Haitian diaspora want to support the efforts of rebuilding the country and especially the project Education for All."
The Foundation has already provided PYE ATE distribution of 20,000 pairs of shoes for 5000 pupils, in more than twenty schools in the country. The distribution of 150 000 other shoes will be provided for the school year 2011-2012, in September.
The founding president says He counts on the support of the Haitian Diaspora and foreign partners willing to help to fight to delete poverty in Haiti.

FONDATION PYE ATE reçoit le support de la diaspora
La fondation PYE ATE HAITI a signé ce vendredi 24 Juin 2011 un protocole avec L’entraineur LeVelle Moton qui promet d’aider la fondation à collecter 100 milles paires de chaussures pour ses prochaines distributions.

Né de père haïtien, Levelle Moton est l’actuel entraineur principal de l’équipe de basket-ball masculin de l’Université Centrale de la Caroline du Nord. Il projette d’organiser des collectes de chaussures dans toute la Caroline pour la fondation. « Je veux rendre à Haïti une partie de ce que j’ai reçu de l’étranger » a déclaré M. Moton qui promet de collecter, à lui seul, 100 milles paires de chaussures.
La Fondation PYE ATE a déjà assuré la distribution de 5,000 paires de chaussures dans plus d’une vingtaine d’établissements scolaires du pays. La distribution de 150 milles chaussures est prévue à l’occasion de la rentrée scolaire 2011-2012, en Septembre prochain.
Le président fondateur déclare compter sur le soutien de la diaspora et des partenaires étrangers désireux d’aider à chausser les déshérités d’Haïti.
Pour le Président Fondateur de PYE ATE, ce geste est un précieux support pour les efforts de ladite fondation. M. Fedrique Pierre a déclaré que : "ce geste prouve à quel point la diaspora haïtienne veut supporter les efforts de la reconstruction du pays et surtout le projet d’Éducation Pour Tous"

La FONDATION PYE ATE HAITI est une organisation à but non lucratif fondée en septembre 2009 et spécialisée dans la distribution de chaussures aux personnes déshéritées. Afin d’améliorer les conditions de vie de plusieurs millions de sœurs et de frère haïtiens et avec la collaboration de ses principaux partenaires, la Fondation débute officiellement ses activités avec sa série de distributions aux bénéfices de plusieurs milliers d’écoliers haïtiens.
Cette semaine, à partir du Lundi 06 au Vendredi 10 Juin 2011 la Fondation procède à sa série de distributions de 5,000 paires de chaussures pour des élèves de 21 écoles de Port-au-Prince. Cette distribution s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un calendrier de distributions prévu par la fondation sur le reste de l’année 2011.
Objectif de la FONDATION PYE ATE HAITI
L’objectif principal de La FONDATION PYE ATÈ HAITI se veut de procurer une paire de chaussures à toutes les personnes pye atè en Haïti. C’est un geste simple qui pourtant a toute sa valeur dans le processus de la reconstruction du pays puisqu’il consiste en une forme de lutte contre la pauvreté, fondement même de toute re/construction.
La Vision de la FONDATION PYE ATE HAITI
La FONDATION PYE-ATÈ HAITI veut impliquer tous ceux-là qui se sentent concernés par la réduction de la pauvreté en Haïti. La Fondation veut aiguiser la conscience des haïtien d’Haïti et de l’extérieur à s’impliquer dans cette campagne de fraternité et d’amour : Offrir une paire de chaussures neuves et/ou en bon état aux personnes pye-atè d’Haïti. C’est un acte de solidarité qui ne coute presque rien. Il suffit que de se rappeler en jetant un œil dans son placard, qu’un frère ou une sœur est pye-atè.
Les Bénéficiaires de la FONDATION PYE ATE HAITI
· Les Écoliers, dans plusieurs sections communales du pays, des enfants vont à l’École pye atè. Ils ont besoin d’une attention spéciale, raison même pour laquelle nous réalisons cette distribution aujourd’hui.
· Les RESTAVEK ils sont des milliers et pour la plus part, pye atè. Ils travaillent du matin au soir, font les courses dans les rues à toutes les heures de la journée et ils restent très souvent pye atè. Nous avons le devoir de penser à eux.
· Les Enfants des rues, vous les voyez, mendier dans les rues sous le soleil et personne ne pense à eux. Ils ne doivent pas être mis à l’écart. Ils sont dans tous les coins de nos rues, sous nos yeux pye atè.
· Les 1.5 millions de personnes vivant dans les camps ou relocalisées après le 12 janvier 2010, à Port-au-Prince, à Léogane, à Jacmel, à Petit-Goâve, à Grand-Goâve. Ces personnes sont démunies et sont aussi devenus des pye atè.
· Les cultivateurs, l’avenir économique du pays dépend d’eux et ils travaillent dans les champs pye atè exposées a tous types d’infections… Nous avons un programme spécial de traitement médical et de distribution ciblée au bénéfice de nos paysans.
